First scientific conference on nanotechnology and rare diseases
The Spanish nanomedicine platform (Nanomed Spain), together with the Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute and the IBEC (Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia), organised an event within the framework of the Rare Disease Day at which they presented the latest innovations in the field of nanomedicine for the treatment and diagnosis of these diseases.

At the beginning of 2019 an international team of researchers, with the participation of professionals from the Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute and the Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Children's Hospital, published the first results of a new therapeutic strategy for retinoblastoma or retinal cancer, a disease that accounts for 11% of malignant tumours in infants under one year old.

The goal of the ETCONNECT project, led by Dr Roser Pueyo and her team (Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute · University of Barcelona Institute of Neurosciences - UBNeuro), is to verify the effectiveness of online cognitive training in improving the cognitive functions of children with cerebral palsy, and to see how this affects their quality of life and brain connectivity.

Sant Joan de Déu seeks young patients and caregivers to create the first pediatric expert patient database
People registered on this platform will help to include the vision of patients in the process of developing clinical trials in pediatrics. In all activities, the participation of pediatric patients will be prioritized and, when this is not possible, that of their caregivers.
This initiative is part of the "Conect4Children" (c4c) project, a collaborative network created to conduct pediatric clinical trials in Europe.
